About this Podcast
HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today we have Dr. Smith, an expert in geriatric mental health and the instructor for our new course, the Certificate Programme in Elderly Emergency Mental Health. Welcome, Dr. Smith! It's great to have you here. GUEST: Thank you for having me. I'm excited to discuss this important topic. HOST: I'm sure our audience is eager to learn about it too. First, could you share some of your personal experiences and insights related to the course topic? GUEST: Of course. Over the years, I've seen a growing need for mental health professionals with expertise in elderly care. The elderly population faces unique mental health challenges like dementia, depression, and anxiety, which require specialized assessment and intervention strategies. HOST: Absolutely, and those challenges are quite significant. Could you tell us about any current industry trends relevant to the course? GUEST: Certainly. Telemedicine and remote mental health services are increasingly popular, especially for elderly individuals who may have mobility issues or live in remote areas. Additionally, there's a growing emphasis on trauma-informed care and suicide prevention in the elderly population. HOST: Those are crucial areas of focus. Now, what are some challenges faced in the field or while learning/teaching this subject? GUEST: One challenge is the stigma surrounding mental health in older adults, which can prevent them from seeking help. Another is the limited availability of mental health services for the elderly, which can make it difficult for professionals to provide adequate care. HOST: Those are important issues to address. Finally, could you share your thoughts on the future of this area or industry? GUEST: I believe the demand for mental health professionals with expertise in elderly care will continue to grow as the global population ages. I'm optimistic that with increased awareness, education, and resources, we can make a meaningful impact in the lives of elderly individuals experiencing mental health crises. HOST: Thank you, Dr. Smith, for sharing your insights and experiences with us today. It's been a pleasure having you on the show, and I'm sure our audience has learned a lot from this conversation. GUEST: Thank you for having me. It's been a pleasure.
