About this Podcast

HOST: Welcome to our podcast, today I'm thrilled to be speaking with an expert in environmental permitting communication. Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you became involved in this field? GUEST: I've been working as an environmental consultant for over 15 years, helping companies navigate complex environmental regulations and permitting processes. I've always been passionate about effective communication, and I saw a need for better training in this area for environmental professionals. HOST: That's fascinating! The course you're teaching is called 'Advanced Certificate in Environmental Permitting Communication.' Can you give us a brief overview of what the course covers and who it's designed for? GUEST: Absolutely! This course is designed for environmental professionals, consultants, and regulatory specialists who need to communicate complex environmental information. We cover topics like stakeholder engagement, permit applications, and public consultations, and we help learners develop strong writing and presentation skills, as well as gain expertise in environmental regulations and best practices. HOST: It sounds like a really comprehensive program. In your experience, what are some of the biggest challenges that environmental professionals face when it comes to communication, particularly around permitting issues? GUEST: One of the biggest challenges is the complexity of environmental regulations and the need to communicate this information in a clear and concise way. It can be difficult to balance the need for technical accuracy with the need to make the information accessible to a wider audience. Another challenge is managing stakeholder expectations and ensuring that everyone is on the same page throughout the permitting process. HOST: Those are definitely important considerations. I'm also curious about the current trends in this field. What are some of the things that you're seeing right now that are shaping the way that environmental permitting communication is being done? GUEST: One trend that we're seeing is the increasing use of digital tools and platforms to communicate about environmental permitting. This includes things like online public consultations, social media, and virtual meetings. Another trend is the growing importance of Indigenous engagement and consultation, as many projects impact Indigenous communities and their traditional territories. HOST: That's really interesting. Looking to the future, what do you think the future of environmental permitting communication might look like? How do you see the field evolving over the next few years? GUEST: I think we're going to see even more emphasis on digital communication and engagement, as well as a greater focus on inclusivity and diversity in the way that we communicate about environmental issues. I also think we're going to see more demand for training and education in this area, as environmental regulations continue to evolve and become more complex. HOST: Well, thank you so much for sharing your insights and expertise with us today. It's been a pleasure talking to you, and I'm sure our listeners have learned a lot from our conversation. GUEST: Thank you for having me! It's been a pleasure sharing my experiences and perspectives with your audience.
